Greetings from Bertucci's......

For the last twenty years my mother and father have been having quarterly lunch get together's at Bertucci's for the classes of 1930 - 1950. They have had as many as 100 people for these simple events. Now they are down to about 70. They are called the LUNCH BUNCH.

So, now that all of us are in our sixties, I feel it is time to start our own quarterly LUNCH BUNCH for the classes of 1960 - 1969.

Suzy Eckmann Needs Our Help, Love and Prayers -- Message from Sari Kadison-Shapiro

Hi Fred...
I wrote you a couple of weeks ago to let you know about Suzy. This is an appeal to everyone and I'm addressing it specifically to you because of the great job you did gathering everyone's email addresses and keeping them up to date, and also in acknowledgement of Sooz being your prom date all those years ago. I've communicated with a few people about this, but not many. And now that I realize that I'm addressing everyone that I can possibly reach through email, it's just about the most difficult thing that I've done in recent memory.

Richie Rosen's eloquent eulogy for Stan Katz inspired me....especially the part about our looking out for each other.Our classmate and my dear friend, confidante and godmother of my son (as much as a Jewish kid can have a godmother), Suzy Eckmann, has been diagnosed with stage 3-4 non-Hodgekins Lymphoma and unfortunately has no health insurance.

Suzy has worked all her life as many of you might know. She worked at Howard Johnson's in high school and worked very hard to be a headliner in Student Stunts as a freshman. (Remember?) She was in Second City (with John Belushi and the Murray brothers, Brian Doyle and Bill) and then the Proposition in Boston with Jane Curtin.

Her comedy partner John Monteith was in Toronto's Second City with Gilda Radner, Dan Ackroyd and John Candy. Together they had their own Off-Broadway show, attended by many
show busisness luminaries and then the show moved to Broadway and was produced by Jim Lipton (of The Actor's Workshop.) During that time, I got to meet Robin Williams, Norman Lear, Carol Channing, Sylvia Sims, Andy Warhol and others who came to their shows. I have to say that Suzy was even more thrilled when old friends she knew from Highland Park came backstage to see her.

No one becomes a comedian for the money and anyone over 35 can't keep up with the demands of the comedy circuit. So what happens to our childhood friends who make us laugh and keeps us entertained?

We count on them to lift our spirits and put a smile on our face. One way we can give back is buy one "ticket" to all the shows we never paid for and for all the memories of good times past and present. We gotta be able to laugh in a decade where daily life is no laughing matter. Even just among friends from HP this could be a great way for friends to help friends.

Last year, the company Suzy was doing catering for cut all their employees back to part time, which meant no benefits. It's quite difficult to pay rent in New York City on an hourly wage. And now that she is ill, she cannot work at all. The doctor she went to said she could use a PET scan, but since she had no insurance she would have to make do with a CT scan. It hurts my heart to think that her care could be compromised because of a lack of funds.

During this time of the Jewish High Holidays, even those of us who are not religiously observant look back on the past year and think of the friends, family members and/or acquaintances we have lost. Like Richie said, we are so fortunate to have our friends from school in our lives. Even if you're not religious, please say a prayer for Suzanne to be written in the "book of life" for the coming year.

Perhaps if we all can contribute a small amount or whatever we can afford, we can help Sooz get the care she needs....or at the very least help ease some of her very real financial worries while she fights for her life.

Sad News - Stan Katz

Stan Katz died of a heart attack Friday. Funeral is Tuesday, August 9 (details below).

I knew Stan from the time we were five when we attended Tamarack Camp together. Stan and I talked many times over the following 57 years, becoming closer in the last few years. We got together several times following his therapy at the Chicago Rehab Institute.

Stan was a great guy. He was fortunate to follow his passion of bridge for so many years, eventually serving in a professional capacity with the American Contract Bridge league.

Richard Kanter passes

I just learned today that my oldest friend died Thursday in Dusseldorf, Germany. I've known Richard since middle school. I know he put up with huge amounts of derision from the casual cruelty that passed for coolness among adolescents. As I recall, most of us could've been the target for similar barbs, but for some reason Richard was singled out all too often to be the class pinata. He was a very loving person, a devoted friend and enthusiastic father to two small children. Richard's first marriage, to Japanese woman, ended in divorce, but a few years ago he met Lily, when he was stationed in Bulgaria with the Commerce Department. He wanted very much to have a family and had far too little time to enjoy them. I believe his posting in Dusseldorf was to be his last in the Foreign Service, and he was looking forward to the next phase of his life.

Yes, 2008 was a difficult year but with G*D's help I survived and my rehab has gone/and is going well.

"Solomon's Proof," the book, now available by Bob Bows

Dear friends, acquaintances, family, and associates,

The exciting changes happening in this country are the beginning of a much larger transformation, a harbinger of the next step in human development: conscious evolution. It is as big a leap as the two previous major evolutionary steps: standing erect and developing symbolic forms (language, music, mathematics, etc.).

Somewhere during the past eleven and a half years we undoubtedly had a conversation along these lines, in which I mentioned the book I was writing. Some of you have even asked me on more than one occasion when the book would be available.

I’m happy to report that the day has finally come!

My motivation for writing this book is simple: Humanity is at its crossroads; we either evolve, which includes the creation of a sustainable, spiritually and scientifically supportive environment, or face the prospect of a painful future on a barren planet. On these points there is little argument, except from those who have been blinded by ego, instinct, and greed.

There have been plenty of words written on this general subject and on a variety of related issues. Having read more than my share of these accounts, I can assure you that there’s nothing out there that even remotely compares with what you’ll find in “Solomon’s Proof: A Psycho-Spiritual Journey to World Consciousness.”

I’d like to recap as succinctly as possible what this book is about.

To begin with, the book is based on www.SolomonsProof.com, which I posted two years ago and have continued to update. The proof is a combination of what physicists call “The Final Theory,” what alchemists call “The Philosopher’s Stone,” and what philosophers call “The Perennial Philosophy.” In other words, the proof integrates the origins and fate of the universe with human consciousness and evolution.

Given the longstanding history of such a quest, the claim that it has been solved by someone who you know may sound preposterous, but until its disproven, we’re assuming that we’ve solved the riddle. The proof is based on a model of light that I’ve been working on since I was in high school.

Necessarily, the language of the proof is complex and not everyone will be able to understand its logical progression; so, to provide a more accessible alternative, the book is written as a novel. There is also a film in the works that will use animation to further simplify and, hopefully, popularize the material.

I hope you don't think I've gone completely crazy! This video was made just for fun and as a surprise for my friends Birthday who loves Cher! But after watching it I realized it ain't bad at all! As a matter of fact, a little over (1000) people must think the same! Would you believe as of today Gigi "The Priceless One" has a combined total of (1099) views in just 8 weeks! Pretty awesome for a someone whose going to have a fricken big big Birthday in another (2) years!!!! Anyway, you might be curious as to why I'm sending this to you in the first place??? Here's the scoop!

I promised my friends that if we ever reach (1000) views I will take them all out for dinner & drinks. This we are doing this week. However....... If we ever reach (2000) views I would take everyone out for dinner & drinks at their favorite Restaurant which is in Brazil!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Airfare on them but din din on Gigi! At this point all that is needed in another (901) views to reach the (2000) goal! I started thinking, why not send my video to my fellow classmates! Sad News Again - Mike Meierhoff - May 17, 2008

We mourn the death of Mike Meierhoff who passed away in Portland, Oregon, May 17, 2008 after a long battle with cancer. He had hoped to attend the reunion last summer but was too weak from the treatment then to travel. He had also spoken of visiting the Highland Park area this spring to visit old friends. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, June 21 in Powell Butte Nature Park.

Hello Gang,

I'm going to miss Jim.

It's been tuff to loose anyone from our classespecially the ones you have known from kindergarten and have reunited recently only to find out they have passed away.

I just want to say how lucky we are to have each other and how much that means to me. Our class was very special, in that, we took care of each other. That's what I remember about Jim Altman...he took care of me and everyone around him. He had a way with social skills that is rare and was unique to him. Despite his temper he always managed to "Keep the Peace" ...wherever possible, yet he never let anyone walk on him. He always spoke his mind and you could say he was a man of authority on all kinds of things.

Jim Altman had a great smile and even better a funny laugh...hard to describe... but very different and contagious. Jim was a dear friend of mine and taught me many things, like how to interpret Bob Dylan songs. He would say "Johnny you know there are a lot of hidden meanings in Dylan's songs ...and I think I know most of what he's saying" Then he would tell me in detail what Bob was really saying. I found those days with Jim fascinating and a wonderful experience. Jim was a great musician and we are going to play several songs in memory of him at his tribute, like the one sung by Keith Harris..."Forever Young"....thanks so much Keith, I know Jimmy will real like this one.

Jim was ahead of his time. He asked a lot of questions about all kinds of things...water supplies to solar energy. His latest comments at the reunion were about energy and recycling. He and I agreed on many topics and I told him that we can make a difference by starting in our own "backyard" ...recycle as much as possible and stop filling the earth with trash. There are so many programs that can help us to wisely use WATER, ENERGY, and BUILDING MATERIALS. Jim would say "We need to take advantage of the new materials to build our homes." As a retired General Building Contractor, Jim always looked at what he could do to protect the homeowner's interest.

Suddenly a widow

I'm wondering if anyone else in the class is a widow or widower. My husband died unexpectedly about five weeks ago from complications of kidney transplant surgery at age 49 (yes! I had a younger husband), and I was the donor. I would really like to hear from anyone else who has experienced the really wrenching loss of a spouse.

As I read the memories that Al, Mike & Nancy shared about Jim, I realized my memories are much the same. Jim & I had several classes together and lunch too, if memory serves me. He was smiling, friendly and welcoming. He was always interested in what someone had to say, no matter who they were. It was wonderful to see him at the Reunion, even though we chatted for only a few minutes. I will miss his warmth and charm, but will treasure the mental picture of him smiling at me in class at HPHS.

A Partially True Story About Jim Altman

I used to park cars with Jim Altman, when we both worked for HDO Productions. This was probably in our Junior and Senior years of High School.

I remember working with Jim twice (or so I'll claim) although it was so long ago I'm not really sure.

For the sake of the story, I'll stipulate that I'm exaggerating a little and call it one night. It was in the middle of winter, and we were parking cars at the Anixter's house. There was some kind of big, fancy party going on there, and the adults were dressed to the nines. There must have been fifty guests or more.

Well, we had the not-so-tough assignment of parking (and driving) some great old American cars. I'm talking about Cadillacs, Pontiacs, Chryslers, Lincolns and Buicks. Big gas guzzlers, made in the U. S. of A. back in the day. We were wearing red vests, freezing our asses off (although, now that I think of it, it might really have been summer). Jim was the ringleader, I was just a disciple of his. Jim knew way more about real life than I, and I looked up to him. He may have been one of the only guys I knew from Highland Park who knew how to smoke and drink with great panache. Like an old time movie star, he was. Suave, that's what he was.

Mrs. A came out at one point, slurring and weaving as she walked, and invited us into the kitchen so we could get something to eat with "the help." I'm talking about black people, in case there's any doubt about who "the help" was in those days. So Jim and I went into the kitchen and stuffed ourselves with whatever the guests were having. And Scott eventually came in to say hi and said we may as well have a few drinks while we were at it. Man, we got hammered. I guess no one gave much thought to driving drunk back then. I know we didn't.

We got tips of as much as $5 at the end of the night from couples whose cars we were more than a little thrilled to be parking and driving--and drive them we did. We would typically take them for a little spin around whatever block (or blocks) were nearby. Use your imagination. I think we were on or near Sheridan Road, but I'm thinking back more than forty years, and I've already asked for poetic license.

When the night ended we counted up our money, comparing notes about who was or wasn't a great tipper. Jim probably had more. Ater all, he knew how to drive stick and I didn't.

So, Jim was a role model for me. Like a big brother. He was one of the many guys from H. P. who helped explain the facts of life to me. Now that I think of it, he looked like the cat who ate the canary. What a grin he had!

From what I can tell, we were lucky and privileged to have grown up where and when we did. I feel the same way about having known Jim--and many others of you as well.

I never saw Jim again after graduation. I hope his pockets were stuffed with cash when he died.

I'm not much of a blogger or big on mass communication, but I did want to say that I was very sorry to hear the news about Jim Altman in your recent email. He was a fine example of an HPHS student, and a great classmate. Most important, I simply remember him as a good person.

I worked for Jim's uncle, Ralph Altman, at the Altman Camera Company in Chicago while I was in college, and Ralph, who had no children that I knew of, thought of him almost as a son, and would frequently pull me from my sales job to show me pictures and letters from Jim, keeping me (and I'm sure others) posted on how well he was doing. He was very proud of Jim.

As I said, I'm not much of a blogger, but I would appreciate it if you could pass this on to the reunion page, and to Sari and Nancy for his tribute. Unfortunately for reasons of both distance and health (Labs on Thurs. and Chemo on Friday) I won't be in a position to attend.

Thanks Fred, and I hope all is well with you. I do have plans to visit my parent's graves on the North Shore this summer with my sister if I can, and I'll let you know if I'm coming to town. Meanwhile, I have plans to see Peggy and Mark Shapiro on Wednesday here. We were planning on watching the reunion DVD if it arrives in time.

Yesterday Niki and I returned from the States after a wonderful vacation in New England including a visit with Mary Engelman Hathorn and her family at her home in Ely, Vermont.

I am so glad that we did decide to come to the Reunion. It was such a lot of fun. I was a bit afraid that the people I still remembered would not be there and I would somehow feel lost among schoolmates I never really got to know during my HPHS year.

It was quite the opposite. Peggy Reuler, Chuck Dawe, Candy Somenzi, Mary Engelman, Linda Verin, Carol Gordon, Andy Simon, Steve Ettlinger, Richard Kanter, and of course Alfredo Monteverde, to name but a few I had not seen nor talked to for more than forty years. It was wonderful. Even Niki had a great time.

Everybody on the organising team did such a great job. Thank you so much!

Please make sure that you stop over in Freiburg whenever you come to Europe. We are really in the middle of it.

Reunion Weekend July 20 - 21 2007

The weekend started with a reception Friday night in Highwood chaired by Ed Orlowsky and Mike Yoelin. Over the course of the evening approximately 150 people showed up, including friends from three continents and all over the United States. Several people played in a golf outing Friday afternoon at Sunset Valley Golf Course in HP that Al Orlowsky put together.

Thanks to Marty Jacobs who already posted his comment about Friday night on our previous post in the blog that got in before this one. We look forward to hearing from you, about being at the reunion or missing it.
